Justin Nelson, a Tufts University alumnus, has played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between his
alma mater and JP Morgan Private Bank. As a former student who once struggled
to secure a finance internship, Nelson’s journey is both inspiring and impactful.
In the late 1990s, the Tufts Financial Network, an affinity group dedicated to connecting students
with opportunities in finance, did not exist. Nelson, who graduated in 1998
with degrees in chemistry and economics, had to rely on personal connections to
land a web development internship at JP Morgan. This experience marked the
beginning of his successful career at the financial giant.
Justin Nelson ascended through the ranks at JP Morgan, eventually becoming a managing
director in asset management. Despite his personal success, he never forgot the
challenges he faced as a student. In 2006, he initiated efforts to make Tufts a
core recruiting school for JP Morgan’s asset management division. His mission
was to provide Tufts students with opportunities that he once lacked.
At first, Nelson’s efforts were solitary. He personally handled all travel arrangements and
expenses, meeting with a small number of students and collecting their résumés.
Over time, interest grew, and Tufts students began securing internships and
entry-level positions at JP Morgan. By 2009, Tufts was officially recognized as a core school for the firm.
Jon Trott, a 2010 Tufts graduate, is one of the many beneficiaries of Nelson’s dedication. Amid
the financial crisis, Trott secured a summer internship at JP Morgan in 2009,
thanks to Nelson’s efforts. Trott, like many others, transitioned into a
full-time role at the firm following his internship.
Today, there is a robust network of Tufts alumni at JP Morgan Private Bank, thanks in large part to Nelson’s advocacy. These
alumni participate in recruiting efforts, screen résumés, and mentor current
students. Nelson’s commitment extends beyond JP Morgan as he actively engages
with the Tufts Financial Network, further solidifying the bond between the
university and the financial industry.
Justin Nelson’s contributions have not only opened doors for countless Tufts students but have
also enriched JP Morgan with talented, capable professionals.
